UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
