The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
