New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately following his victory in November.

"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside inside me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings far removed from his humble Astoria apartment.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
