A minimum of 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
