The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezers in an flat in the western part of Austria.
The deceased, a Syrian woman and her daughter, who had been missing for a number of months, were detected on Friday. The freezers were placed behind a false wall in the apartment, located in the city of Innsbruck.
Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The elder brother, a work associate of the female victim, told authorities last week that there had been an incident—but rejected homicide.
Informing journalists earlier, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office announced the brothers were being held on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".
The identities of those concerned have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in compliance with Austrian law.
The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.
Police stated the male associate claimed at the time she had gone on an prolonged visit with her child to travel to her relatives in the nation of Turkey.
The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized abroad repeatedly.
However when police entered the victim's residence, her cellphone was found.
Someone also stated hearing a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mother" on the date the pair were thought to have disappeared.
An expanded official inquiry was launched, with officers finding various messages transmitted via the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her employer and messages to the male associate.
Law enforcement said a significant cash transfer was also moved to the suspect.
The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed media representatives on Tuesday that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezer had been placed there.
The brothers removed the freezer from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter went missing, the official said. And a shortly afterward, they obtained an additional appliance.
Officials believe they consider this points to the fatalities were intentionally orchestrated.
"How they died could not be determined due to the advanced decay of the remains," she commented.
The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—stated the precise timeline is still unclear, but the victims were expertly concealed and not discovered during a previous house search.
While the men were arrested in the summer, it was only on the 12th of November that the elder brother admitted to an event and to concealing the remains. He denies any murderous intent, officials said.
At the same time, his brother admitted to a concealment but denied involvement in a homicide.
The brothers are presently in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in two Austrian cities, around 117 miles (189km) apart.
In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative declared the "suspected killing of two... constitutes the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and uncovers a cruel system".
"Women and girls are being killed due to the mere fact that they are women and girls," they went on to say.
"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must fight resolutely."
