The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by experts, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea levels. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy demand.

Possible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, some of which are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as unlikely but credible. The researchers explained that these models addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

"The climate extremes we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said the professor who directed the study. "The UK has been making preparations without the frameworks to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now given policymakers what they need to plan for environmental results they hope never happen, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Extreme Weather Projections

A second set of severe models maps the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above average, while rainfall could be triple standard measurements.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios occurring remains uncertain due to unknown factors about what steps will be enacted to combat global heating and how the climate system will behave. This approach was described as similar to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for financial systems.

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating rising well above 4C by 2100 could occur if climate action breaks down or if strong feedback loops such as the Amazon rainforest becoming a net carbon source unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and losing stability due to ocean warming. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Farming would be severely challenged and freshwater availability would be completely altered," said the lead researcher.
  • Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, inundating low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by infrastructure experts.

The research created the extreme models using a blend of observed and historical experience, computer simulations and scientific theory. These outcomes exclude international cascading effects including the global food shortages and geopolitical instability.

The project was commissioned as part of a national climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have stated that insufficient focus was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

An independent advisory body has said that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the risks for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been described as being "very weak" by certain experts.

An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the core of the country's focus, both building resilience and becoming a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is ready for the effects."
