Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
