The state AG has launched a recent reporting form urging residents to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout New York. This action follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass demonstrations.
A lawmaker revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," the AG wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and captured federal operations recently, I urge you to submit that material with us. We are dedicated to reviewing these reports and investigating any wrongdoings."
The portal includes options to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a section to note where it occurred. When submitting, users must tick a option that states that "authorities could utilize any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved dozens of government officers, occurred in a popular area of Manhattan where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily widely – frequently to tourists.
Videos of Tuesday's raid depict multiple masked and armed federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away witnesses. Masses of locals pursued the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was noticed rolling through the urban roads.
At a Wednesday press conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This represents a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for this administration to bring in the military to halt violence that they have created."
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, including the state leader.
"Once again, the current administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that create fear, rather than security. It has to end," a contender stated.
New York City immigrant rights groups spoke out also.
"ICE raided Manhattan's Chinatown with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to go after small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has claimed it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities since the start of the present government.
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in New York and across the US this year.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the current administration. Protests targeting ICE are ubiquitous along with claims of force and inhumane treatment.
