Israelis have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the terms of the agreement.

A high-ranking representative familiar with the talks indicated that an late session of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and zone districts and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.

"We are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area reported two more dead people had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for aid to the south, medical staff stated.

The region's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
