California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to make a decision about whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent critic of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would expand Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about Californians in a recent interview on Fox News. The secretary disclosed plans to withhold federal funds from California and warned suspending the state's ability to provide CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," he said, in the wake of a this week's deadly accident in California involving an undocumented trucker that caused loss of life and injured individuals.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had before announced he was withholding $40 million from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a recent release countering the secretary's comments. "For now, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A this month's study found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.

"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, alone, remarkable," he stated. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
