Arsenal's Manager Concedes Future Tenure Hinges on Winning Silverware.

On the eve of his six-year milestone as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup triumph a short time later. But, that early success remains his lone major honor after taking over from Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” he stated upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And many things must occur in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the six-year milestone with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced just after his appointment was announced.

The Current Landscape

Given that chasing Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League for the first time. This situation arises despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues over the course of last season.

The manager is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

The manager expanded, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “My belief is that a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He stated further, expressing gratitude for the strong backing from the club's ownership, yet identifying the players' commitment as paramount. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

Latest Fitness Blow

Arsenal heads into the upcoming game coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to see him miss action for the coming weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

He pointed to the squad's displays as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
