Although not quite at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
